Who we Are

Madulammoho is a Sesotho word describing communities that live together despite their diversities.

We are a registered non-profit (Section 21) Social Housing Institution (SHI) that was established in 2004 to provide affordable  transitional and communal housing to Johannesburg’s inner city community. Madulammoho is registered as a fully accredited SHI with the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA)

The Madulammoho Story

Using an economic cost recovery model with affordability as the starting point, we pioneered a model that meets the housing needs of the very poor.

The Stepped Approach

As people are supported and their skills are developed, they are able to earn more and, as a result, their housing options improve.

Madulammoho Housing Association

Today, Madulammoho operates ten housing projects, six in the Inner City, two on the West Rand and two in the Western Cape with 2600 rental units. This allows more than 7,800 low-income earners to call Madulammoho buildings “home”.

Though we are a social housing institution, Madulammoho is not just about bricks and mortar. Through our various partnerships we help build holistic communities that foster social development. Madulammoho also creates opportunities for our tenants to engage in sports and recreational activities like boxing, soccer and aerobics through our Community Wellness Programme, Bambisanani Hands of Hope (BHH).

Madulammoho’s work in the community has not gone unrecognized. In 2008-2009, we were the proud recipients of the Platinum Impumelelo Award for Innovative Work in the Field of Poverty Reduction and Community Development; the Johannesburg Development Agency’s Halala Joburg Award: ‘Living Joburg – Property Management and Affordable Housing’; and the Govan Mbeki Award for Best Social Housing Institution of the Year: Gauteng.
