While energy costs continue to rise, Madulammoho Housing Association started investigations on energy saving strategies for their Social Housing projects. Fleurhof Views, consisting of 286 rental units was the first project where we introduced heat pump technology to replace convectional geysers.

Using heat pumps to produce hot water have a number of benefits for both the tenants and the environment. The initial estimated energy savings obtained by using the energy efficient heat pumps are approximately 113 511 kWh per month or approximately 1 362 132 kWh per year. When comparing these heat pumps to the conventional geysers there are savings of up to 50% in electricity costs. At Fleurhof alone it was estimated that using heat pumps will reduce our carbon footprint by 1022 tons ter year.

All project developed after Fleurhof Views are now using Heat Pump technology to supply hot water to our tenants. But Madulammoho even went further and in 2018 Belhar Gardens Rental Estate was the first Social Housing Project in South Africa to achieve EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification with the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) recognizing Belhar Gardens social housing development for its water and energy saving design.
