who is madulammoho?

  • Madulammoho, a non-profit (Section 21) social housing institution, was established in 2004 to provide transitional and communal housing to Johannesburg's inner city.
  • It is important to note that we are not a charity and we are not affiliated with the government. Non-profit simply means that we do not distribute our surplus funds to owners or shareholders. Rather, we use any surplus revenue to pursue our mission of providing clean, safe and affordable housing to low-income earners.

who are our clients?

  • Madulammoho (Sesotho for "living together") is home to more than 2,400 low-income tenants living in Johannesburg's inner city. Our tenants are singles and families, but we house only South African citizens.

what do we do?

  • Madulammoho currently operates seven housing projects, which together total over 950 housing units across Johannesburg's inner city.
  • Madulammoho creates opportunities for residents to engage in sports and recreational activities, such as boxing, soccer, karate and aerobics.
  • Madulammoho's very own B.G. Alexander is home to a genuine Cruyff Court. Donated by the Netherlands National Football Team, the five-a-side soccer pitch was christened the Orange Cruyff Court Hillbrow and was officially opened by the Dutch team just before the kick-off to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
  • Madulammoho, with its partner Metro Evangelical Services (MES), operates a 72-hour emergency shelter, a creche facility and training and assessment centers for the organisations' low-income clients.

do we make a difference?

  • In 2008-2009 Madulammoho was the recipient of the Platinum Impumelelo Award for Innovative Work in the Field of Poverty Reduction and Community Development; the Johannesburg Development Agency's Halala Joburg Award: 'Living Joburg - Property Management and Affordable Housing'; and the Govan Mbeki Award for Best Social Housing Institution of the Year: Gauteng.
  • Former president, Thabo Mbeki has made official visits to Madulammoho projects.
