Hillbrow Gets a Cruyff Court

a world cup legacy for madulammoho

In July, the tenants of Madulammoho were the recipients of an incredible World Cup legacy - a Cruyff Court five-a-side soccer pitch donated to us by the Netherlands National Football Team.

As a thank-you for hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the players contributed their match bonuses (R1 million) to make the donation of the soccer pitch - christened the Orange Cruyff Court Hillbrow - possible.

"We would like to give the children of Hillbrow what we found so valuable in our own youth - a safe place to play and have fun," said Giovanni van Bronckhorst, captain of the Dutch team.

"As representatives of the Netherlands we feel privileged to be playing at the World Cup, but we do not come here to play and perform in the World Cup only. We want to support the local community as well," he added.

The pitch, located at the B.G. Alexander, was officially opened on June 11th by the Netherlands team and former professional footballer, Johan Cruyff himself. Since then Madulammoho, along with the eKhaya Neighbourhood Precinct has hosted a "fun month" for Hillbrow's kids, which included soccer tournaments, foosball and Playstation games.

"I'm excited for the soccer pitch because children used to break windows and stuff life that so now we can play, we have more space to play," says 15-year-old Siyabonga, who lives at the B.G. Alexander with his mother and dreams of one day playing professionally. "We can play and practice and we can know more about soccer."
