Our Interns

Our Intern - Kelly

The greatest lessons of personal and professional growth cannot be taught in a classroom, but in life experiences and in human relationships. In June 2011, I began interning with Rooftops Canada’s partner Madulammoho Housing Association (MHA) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
My job is to help develop a comprehensive communication strategy for Madulammoho, including a strategy for funders, upgrading their existing website and developing a template for newsletters.

In experiencing the realities of social injustice in the developing world, I know that my worldview will shift and expand. As I immerse myself in a new culture and way of life, I look forward to engaging in meaningful work with a compassionate organization that nurtures social change. I travel with an open mind and an open heart, working from roots to rooftops to empower, to heal, to build visible change and to create sustainable communities with Madulammoho.

Our Intern - Karlye Wong

I am currently working with the maintenance department of Madulamoho as an intern placed here by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and Rooftops Canada.
My work here with the maintenance team is to help identify and fill in gaps that may contribute towards ameliorating the efficiency and effectiveness of the maintenance system at MHA. In the past couple months, I have been working towards completing building condition assessments of all the projects through evaluating the condition of elements of the projects, assessing the amount of material needed for repair, life span remaining in elements, prioritizing work that needs to be done, and estimating the cost of servicing and replacement. More recently, I have been involved in improving the fire safety protocols for the projects, as well as helping restructure the daily maintenance inspection system.
