Welcome to Madulamoho Housing Association

"the heartbeat of affordable huosing in the city"

Madulamoho Housing was established in 2004 to roll out new Transitional and communal housing stock in the Inner City of Johannesburg. Madulamoho is a registered Social Housing Institution with the Gauteng Department of Housing Registrar. (Registration no 260 90519) Refer appendix 2.

Johannesburg Trust for the Homeless joined forces with Madulamoho and in December 2005. The net result has been a stronger Madulamoho with a more diverse Board and stronger operational team. Madulamoho has received capacity funding from the Gauteng Partnership Fund for the period 2006 And 2007 and will be applying for an additional grant.

Madulamoho currently successfully manages 3 projects; the Europa House, Cornelius House and the New Regent. All three are communal housing projects focusing on the lower income market of people earning less that R3500 per month. Our experience with the Europa has convinced us that there is a huge demand for transitional and communal housing units in this area of Johannesburg and as a result we are developing two more projects adjacent to the Europa. These two projects will provide an additional 402 units before the end of 2007 and 181 units in 2008.

Community development is a core value of Madulamoho and is the reason we have a Social Development Contract with MES who provide a full range of social services to MHA. These services forms part of the extensive development plan for its tenants. MES is well established welfare organis ations who have been instrumental in community development in Hillbrow for the last 20 years. MES is contracted by the Department of Social Services and Popul ation Development to train and find employment for 400 people a year in Hillbrow with Madulamoho providing accommod ation for these people. These services are not an afterthought or point scouring exercise, but is an integrated part of the business of Madulamoho.

Official support for Madulamoho’s housing model and developmental plan is demonstrated through the official opening of Europa House by Councillor Amos Masondo (Mayor of The City of Johannesburg in 2005) and a visit from the President of South Africa, Mr. Thabo Mbeki
